project overview

Northern Health is a regional health authority serving communities across northern British Columbia. With a broad range of communications needs spanning both patient-facing and staff-facing audiences, their design requests required a designer who could take unformatted, information-heavy source documents and transform them into clear, brand-cohesive materials that were genuinely easy to engage with. I was brought on as a graphic designer through Xerox, who served as Northern Health's in-house agency, and was responsible for managing incoming design requests, reviewing creative briefs, and producing a wide range of print and digital materials for both healthcare professionals and patients. _____________________ Transforming Complex Documents into Accessible Visuals: A significant portion of the work involved receiving unformatted Microsoft Word documents and translating them into polished, brand-cohesive materials. This required strong typographic judgment, a clear understanding of information hierarchy, and the ability to make dense healthcare content approachable for a wide range of readers. Materials produced included brochures, posters, handouts, and business cards for both patient-facing and staff-facing audiences. Producing Long-Form Instructional Booklets: Among the most involved projects were four or more instructional booklets ranging from 40 to 60 pages each. These booklets were designed to help healthcare workers accurately use medical tools in order to deliver safe, effective patient care. Taking these from raw Word documents to visually compelling, easy-to-navigate educational resources required careful attention to layout, readability, and consistency across a high page count. Custom Physiotherapy Illustration Sheets: To support healthcare clients directly, I created two physiotherapy exercise reference sheets featuring 10 or more custom illustrations. These were drawn in Illustrator and designed to clearly communicate movement and positioning in a way that stock imagery could not. The illustrations prioritized clarity and accessibility for clients across a range of literacy levels. Sourcing and Integrating Visual Assets: Where custom illustration was not required, I sourced and integrated Adobe Stock imagery to enhance the visual quality and engagement of materials. All imagery was selected with the audience in mind and placed within layouts that reinforced Northern Health's brand standards. _____________________ The Outcome: Across my time with Northern Health, I produced a broad range of materials that served both patients and healthcare professionals across northern BC. The long-form instructional booklets in particular represented a meaningful contribution to staff education, translating dense medical guidance into clear, well-structured visual content that supported accurate and effective patient care. _____________________ Skills Demonstrated: Print Design · Editorial Layout · Long-Form Document Design · Custom Illustration · Information Design · Accessibility · Healthcare Communications · Brand Application · Adobe InDesign · Adobe Illustrator · Adobe Photoshop · Adobe Acrobat · Monday.com
