project overview
The Independent Rights Advice Service provides information to people who are detained and experiencing involuntary treatment under the Mental Health Act in BC. This information helps people understand what their legal rights are and how they can act on those rights. The legal information available to these clients was accurate but dense and difficult to engage with, particularly for audiences navigating an already stressful and unfamiliar situation. IRAS BC needed a social media video series for Instagram, TikTok, and Vimeo that could communicate key legal rights in a clear, accessible, and trustworthy way, including who IRAS BC is, what a Rights Advisor can offer clients, and the right to a review panel. I was brought on as the sole designer and was responsible for the full scope of design production as well as coordinating the project management infrastructure used by the broader team. This included building the visual and motion graphic system from the ground up, producing all nine videos, and ensuring the workflow supported timely design and legal reviews throughout. _____________________ The Process: Reducing Post-Production Work with a Filming Guide: Before production began, I created a two-page filming guide distributed to each Rights Advisor. The guide covered iPhone camera settings, lighting tips, framing suggestions, and filming-to-editing recommendations. This proactive step reduced the volume of post-production corrections needed and was a key factor in meeting the final project deadline. Building a Brand System Without Brand Guidelines: IRAS BC did not have existing social media or video brand guidelines. The only reference material available was their website. Using the browser inspect tool, I extracted the brand font (Poppins) and brand colour palette, then used these as the foundation to develop a comprehensive set of video and social media brand guidelines. This ensured visual consistency across all nine videos and all three platforms, building audience trust and reinforcing IRAS BC's credibility. Designing for Accessibility: Accessibility was a core consideration throughout the project. I researched current best practice guidelines for social media captioning and applied these standards across all video content. Caption styles were defined and locked in Premiere Pro, and chapter markers were added and exported alongside caption files for Vimeo compatibility. Motion Graphic System: To achieve consistency and efficiency across nine videos, I developed a suite of reusable motion graphic templates (MOGTs) in After Effects. These included section transitions, section title headers, medical form highlights, web page navigation sequences, and end credits. Using MOGTs rather than building motion graphics individually for each video ensured brand cohesion and significantly reduced production time. Project Management and File Organization: The project involved multiple stakeholders and required both design reviews and legal reviews at various stages. I set up and maintained the project tracking system in Monday.com to ensure all review stages were clearly logged and nothing was missed. All files were organized and maintained in Dropbox with consistent folder structures and naming conventions, making it straightforward for stakeholders to locate the correct files at each stage of the review process. _____________________ The Outcome: All nine videos were delivered on schedule and are pending launch across IRAS BC's Instagram, TikTok, and Vimeo channels. The project resulted in a reusable motion graphic and brand system that IRAS BC can carry forward into future content, and a filing and review workflow that kept a multi-stakeholder, compliance-sensitive project organized from start to finish. _____________________ Skills Demonstrated: Motion Graphics · Video Production · Brand Identity · Accessibility Design · Social Media Design · Project Management · Stakeholder Communication · Adobe Premiere Pro · Adobe After Effects · Monday.com · Dropbox
