project overview

This personal project was a music video for a post-punk cover of the Kaiser Chiefs' "Love's Not a Competition (But I'm Winning)." The concept centred on a film noir femme fatale seeking revenge, with the rose serving as a visual motif for death throughout. The twist reveals itself when a man hands her a rose, and she meets the same fate as her victims. The visual direction was black and white throughout, drawing on classic film noir aesthetics to reinforce the mood and narrative. As the director, I was responsible for every stage of the project from concept through to final delivery, with the entire shoot scheduled to take place in a single evening. _____________________ Pre-Production and Logistics: Getting this video made required detailed pre-production planning. I developed the full storyboard and shot list to map out the visual narrative before the shoot, scouted and confirmed locations, and fabricated the props needed to execute the concept. One of the most complex logistical challenges was coordinating the schedules of everyone appearing in the video and aligning those availability windows with camera and external lighting rental dates, all while working within the constraint of a single-night shoot. On-Set Execution: The shoot was executed in one evening using a Sony DSLR, a gimbal, and external handheld lighting. This was my first time operating a gimbal, which I worked with to achieve the controlled, cinematic movement the noir aesthetic called for. Managing lighting, camera operation, and directing talent simultaneously within a tight single-night window required focus and adaptability throughout. Post-Production: Post-production was completed in Premiere Pro. I handled all editing, applied the black and white grade to establish the film noir tone, placed scene markers throughout, and cut a social media trailer to accompany the full release. _____________________ The Outcome: The video was completed within the single-evening shoot window and delivered as a fully edited final cut alongside a social media trailer. The project demonstrated the ability to take a concept from a written narrative to a finished visual product while managing all logistics, crew coordination, equipment, and post-production independently. _____________________ Skills Demonstrated: Directing · Storyboarding · Shot List Creation · Location Scouting · Prop Fabrication · On-Set Production · Gimbal Operation · Video Editing · Colour Grading · Social Media Content Creation · Adobe Premiere Pro
